Computational Fluid Dynamics

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is defined as the numerical simulation of fluid dynamic flows. CFD is a discipline that solves a set of equations governing fluid flow in, over or through any geometrical configuration. The equations can be steady or unsteady (transient), compressible or incompressible, inviscid or viscous, laminar or turbulent, single or multiphase, with or without heat transfer, with or without mass transfer, and with or without chemical reaction. The field has been well established and is commonly applied as a design / analysis tool in many areas, such as the chemical industry. CFD is closely linked with other piping stress analysis programs in that they often share use of the finite element method and have similar origins.

Industrial Applications

The following abbreviated list gives an indication of only some of the work being done in industry by PAI Engineering using CFD:

1. Complete Two-Phase Flow Simulation in Equipment.

2. Complete compressible, two-phase, transient flow modeling for pressure relief and paper mill digester systems. Results can be integrated with piping stress analysis for time history stress analysis.

3. Complete Heat Exchanger Simulations and Furnace/Combustor Simulations.

4. Transport Process Modeling such as mixing patterns in reactors or dryer simulations with concentration and temperature profiles.

5. Detailed pump, valve, and piping modeling including flow measurement device simulations.

6. Non-newtonian fluid flow simulations.
